Tenerife restaurants

With so many good restaurants in the tourist areas offering international cuisine, it is sometimes hard to find authentic local food. The basis of Canarian cuisine is a combination of fresh vegetables, fruit and fish served as light meals, which are easily digested in the hot climate. Traditional Spanish recipes are fused with African and Latin American influences to make for unique and delicious dishes.

Tenerife Fish Restaurants
If you like fish, then you will find a wonderful selection here. The most common regional fish recipes use salted fish either in a soup or covered in a mojo sauce, a spicy red sauce. Another island staple is wrinkled potatoes (papas arrugadas), usually served with the ubiquitous mojo sauce. Vegetarians will enjoy the savory hotpot of chickpeas (potaje de berros). For desert, there are lots of tropical fruits as well as bienmesabe, a mixture of honey, egg, almond cream and rum.

Traditional Tenerife Cuisine
In the tourist resort areas, most of the restaurants cater to Europeans and serve a standard international menu. Granted, much of it is delicious, but if you want a more authentic island meal then you need to go to one of the smaller towns around Tenerife, where you can indulge in tapas and local wine, called el Monte.
